曹達はソーダの別名、木通はアケビと読み薄紫色から連想して名付けました。またアケビは「開け実（あけみ）」とも読めることから、熟すと実が自然に割れて中身が見える様子が「運が開ける」「（新しい扉が）開く」を連想させ、開運の象徴とされます。
